Life in a Bark Home: A Tour and Discussion

Sunday, January 27, 1:00 - 4:30 pm
Without heavy machinery, extensive heavy transport networks, and the wide use of metal tools, humans the world over have had to work within their ecosystems to build homes and provide for their needs. They must develop a deep relationship with the beings around them in order to live and thrive. Their architecture, diets, lifeways, and traditions reflect their local landscape and climate. As part of a broad effort to re-establish a connection with place, Matt built a bark-covered home with friends, some modern tools and materials, trees, and his current understanding of the construction principles that the indigenous people of the North Carolina Piedmont may have used for many centuries prior to European invasion.

Come out and experience a bark home built with a combination of timeless and contemporary techniques and materials! We will begin the afternoon discussing the local historical context for bark structures and the building process, a tour of the bark home, and a walk through the areas of Ardea Homestead Sanctuary where trees were taken for building. We will discuss the joys and challenges of living in this home, as well as insights gained from sleeping, reading, reflecting, entertaining, and sitting quietly in it over 6 months. Please come with any and all questions!

Hot tea will be served. This tour is free/by donation, meaning you can contribute any amount of money or none at all. All are welcome!

To REGISTER and reserve your space please complete this online form by January 23rd.

If we are nowhere to be found, you have not looked in the forest.
